CES: Jeep Wrangler Compass, Renegade and Renegade Plug In Hybrids

Jeep calls this feature 4xe.

Three plug-in hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles from Jeep will be bringing to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The tech, affectionately called 4xe (we are pretty sure it’s four-byE and not fourX-E), will make its way to the Jeep Renegade and Compass. These two vehicles were likely to be the same as the Jeeps that were displayed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, although they are dressed up for North American duty.

We expect the Renegade, Compass4xe models will pair a turbocharged, 1.3-liter four cylinder engine with an electric motor mounted at the rear. The former powers the front axle, while the latter powers the rear. This combination should produce more than 200 horsepower. Both should offer more than a few hundred miles of all-electric driving range. Mini’s Countryman CooperSE plug in hybrid provides 18 miles of EPA-rated EV-range, and the Jeeps should be able to match or exceed that.

We don’t know much about the Wrangler4xe. We believe that the plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler SUV will continue to provide mechanical power via an internal combustion engine, despite the Wrangler’s standard rear-drive-based powertrain setup. It is likely that an electric motor will also be added to this power. The Wrangler 4xe’s motor is likely to be located between the transmission and engine. It will provide enough low-end power to support the off-road capabilities of the model, while also offering the option for all-electric driving.

We will be able to learn more about the Wrangler and its Renegade siblings at CES.
