Changan UNI-V Is China’s Stylish Honda Civic Si Competitor

However, it is unlikely to be coming to the US anytime soon.

While customer preferences for new cars can be very similar across the globe, there are sometimes major differences. China is an example of this. While the crossover and SUV dominate the market, traditional segments like sedans and trucks are still in high demand. The People’s Republic still loves sedans, once America’s favourite family vehicle. There’s even a new generation of small performance sedans.

The Changan UNIV is a compact, sporty sedan – or more specifically, a liftback – that is currently available in China. It is a cheaper alternative to the Honda Civic Si. However, the Chinese model will not be available in the United States or Europe. The GAC Emow is its main competitor in China. The machine is attractive and features modern technology. Let’s get started with the numbers. The UNI-V’s 1.5-liter gasoline engine produces a peak output power of 188 horsepower (138 kilowatts), and 222 pound-feet (399 Newton-meters). The power is transferred to the front wheels only by a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. This should allow for acceleration of 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in just 7.1 seconds. Side note: Changan will launch a 2.0-liter engine and an EV version with a longer range.

How does it feel in real life? Although the interior is well-designed with modern tech and quality materials, it doesn’t really look original due to its Peugeot-style layout. Although the video’s host points out that the car doesn’t feel very dynamic when driving, this could just be due to the quiet exhaust system and more conservative gas pedal responses. It’s not helping either, as the suspension is tuned to comfort and not speed in corners.

Although it may not be the most exciting or fastest car to drive, this video reviews shows that it is a solid choice in the performance sedan market. It’s a shame it’s only available in China.
