The pace car for Sunday’s 106th Indianapolis 500 will be a 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 70th anniversary Edition. Sarah Fisher, an ex-IndyCar racer, will be driving the car.
The 2023 Corvette Z06 pace vehicle uses the same 670 horsepower 5.5-liter naturally aspirated, naturally aspirated V8 engine as the road-going model. The Z07 Performance Package adds additional features such as Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 calibrations and carbon-fiber wheels with Michelin Sport Cup II R ZP tires. This pack adds carbon pieces.
The pace car comes with the 70th anniversary edition package in White Pearl Metallic Tri-Coat. It comes with wheels with anniversary center caps and rims in red. Red brake calipers can be found. Red engine covers are available for coupes. Ceramic two-tone leather interior with suede inserts, red contrast stitching on seats and steering wheel.
The pace car also has some extra features that aren’t available on the models in the showrooms. The body has a black stripe at the center with a separate red band at the driver’s side. The logo on the roof reads “70 1953 – 2023” and the rear spoiler bears the number “Z06”. Each door is decorated with Indy 500 graphics.
Chevy will begin building the 2023 Z06 this year. The automaker has not yet released pricing information for the sporty model.
Since 1978’s debut, the Corvette has been the Indy 500 pace car for 19 consecutive years. This is also the sixth consecutive year that a ‘Vette has this responsibility. Sarah Fisher has qualified for Indy 500 nine times during her racing career. The record for a female driver is still her four-lap qualifying speed in 2002 of 229.439 mph, which was the fastest ever. Since 2017, she has been the Indy 500 pacecar driver during caution periods.
