The starting price includes destination fees and is $14,595
You can cross another car off the American list. After a decade on the US market, the Chevrolet Spark has officially ceased production. It was an entry-level subcompact at a very low price and served ten years as a vehicle of choice. It is the most affordable new American car, selling for $13,600 plus a $995 destination fee. The Spark is priced at $14,595.
Chevrolet did not offer any explanation for their decision. A spokesperson for the company confirmed that the Spark would continue to be in production until August 2022. After that, it would be phased off the lineup. Chevrolet made it clear that buyers who are looking for comfort, style, and function at an affordable price have strong options in Chevrolet’s compact SUVs. Although the Spark was not cancelled for any direct reason, it is clear that all American automakers are prioritizing SUVs.
The roots of the Spark are deep rooted with Daewoo, when it was known as Matiz. This dates back to 1998. The Spark was first introduced to America in 2007 as a concept, the Beat. It then took the Spark moniker when it was shown preproduction at the Detroit Auto Show in 2009. The automaker finally sold it in 2013 as a model. It was a modest success at a time when many companies were still recovering after the 2008-2010 auto industry collapse.
In 2015, the fourth generation (and last) was released as a 2016 model. It received little attention as crossovers and SUVs continued to penetrate the market. In 2021, 24,459 Sparks were sold. This is a decrease of 26.9 per cent compared to 2020. Despite this, the Spark still outsold last year’s Chevrolet Camaro, with only 21,893 Bow Tie pony car homes.
The Chevrolet Trax SUV is now the most affordable vehicle in General Motors’ family at $22,595. This is an $8,000 increase over the Spark hatchback. The Mitsubishi Mirage will take the title of the cheapest car in America when the Spark is gone later in the year. It costs $15,640 plus destination charges.
