The Chinese company was saved by its bizarre proportions from legal trouble.
The Beijing Motor Show this year is one of few shows that survived despite the ongoing pandemics in many parts of the world. The Auto China 2020, despite the lower attendance, gives us a glimpse at many great things while also showing us familiar designs with a new badge. The SS Dolphin, a Chevy Corvette C1 replicacat, is one of these.
However, despite the obvious similarities to the classic Chinese carmaker, Songsan appears to be out of control with its production vehicle, according CarScoops. The website claims that Songsan did not receive permission from Chevy to build its SS Dolphin. Kevin Kelly, Chevrolet’s senior manger of car and cross-border communications, stated that Songsan did not use trademarked logos or names, which implies that the car isn’t infringed. He said, “The design is not identical to that of the C1.”
The SS Dolphin may be similar to the C1, but it has strange proportions and a very different interior. Despite the strange proportions and non-use of Chevy’s logo and name, it is easy to see that the SS Dolphin was cloned.
Songsan’s SS Dolphin is not the only vehicle that inspired the Beijing Motor Show. A minivan, which is modeled after the Volkswagen Transporter T1 was also displayed at the show. It’s commonly known as the VW Kombi. Chinese car companies are known for making copies of western cars, but this doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t any good stuff coming out of China. Geely, who is the owner of Volvo has been creating great vehicles by itself, as well as GAC’s unique European designs. We only hope that the rest of the world follows our lead.
