Chevy Says Corvette C8 Was at Nurburgring in 7:29.9

This is impressive for a sports car at a reasonable price.

Since Chevrolet switched the script with the 2020 Corvette C8 there have been number crunchers eagerly awaiting the official Nurburgring lap times. The team caught the official lap time of the car in the trailer for C8 Corvette documentary. Chevy confirmed that the time was 7:29.9. This is one second slower than the reported 7:28.30 lap speed. This is still impressive when compared with others.

At 7:19.63, the 2012 Corvette ZR1 was the fastest Corvette lap around the famed racetrack. The fastest official Corvette lap time was the 2018 Chevy Camaro ZL11LE at 7:19.63.

With foreign competitors, the lap time of the C8 Corvette is also comparable. At 7:29, the C8’s lap time is slightly slower than that of the 2009 Nissan GT-R. It beat the 2015 Audi R8 V10 Plus and 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia. It also beat 2012 Mercedes SLS AMG. This is impressive considering the huge price difference between these supercars.

According to a GM spokesperson, Corvette Racing driver Oliver Gavin was behind the wheel when he set the lap record last summer. The Z51 Performance Package was used on the Corvette. It meant that the 6.2-liter LT2 engine produced 495 horsepower (369 kilowatts), and 470 pound feet (637 Newton-meters). This package adds to the Corvette’s performance with an electronic limited slip differential, larger brakes and more.

The new mid-engine sports car’s lap time of the 2020 Corvette Stingray is only the beginning. The Z06 is a hotter, more powerful Corvette. There are already rumors about it. The 2020 Stingray is just a stone’s throw from the C6 ZR1 & C7 Z06 – what will their mid-engine counterparts do around the track?
