Ford’s F-Series is still the champion, but not by a huge margin.
It is safe to say 2020 was not a prosperous year. This is especially true in the automotive industry, where sales were lower than they used to. But, the economy delivered. Already, we have the numbers for America’s favourite body style: trucks.
These numbers include full-size trucks as well as half-ton and heavy-duty trucks. The 2020 numbers are available for all major players and there is no surprise as to who comes in first or last. While the Ford F-Series continues its dominance on American roads, the Nissan Titan’s deathwatch continues. You will see some interesting trends if you dig deeper into the stats. Let’s get started.
The truck war is the most difficult and closest. Chevrolet isn’t doing well in terms of pony cars sales but it’s different in the truck segment. The Chevy silverado outsells Ram at the end of this year. They sold 594,094 units to Ram’s 562,676 and gave the Golden Bow Tie the second-place truck sales title.
A fourth-place GM brand is GMC, which moved 253,016 Sierras in the year before entering 2021. The list ends with Japanese full-size trucks at sixth and fifth places. The Tundra sold 109,203 units, while the Titan moved a measly 26,439. Ford meanwhile jumped everyone’s queue by selling 787.422 F-Series trucks. This is a difference of just under 100,000 trucks from second-place Chevy.
Here’s the fascinating deep dive. Among all the trucks listed here, GM was the only one to report a sales rise compared with numbers from 2019. The Silverado saw a 3.2 percent increase in sales year-over-year, while the Sierra saw a remarkable 8.9 percent sales growth. Both Ford and Ram saw declines. Ford saw the largest drop at 12.2 percent from Detroit automakers despite the launch of the new F-150 in later this year. The decline in Ram sales is roughly comparable to that of the Blue Oval, which saw Ram sales drop 11 percent.
While Toyota saw a 2 percent drop in sales of the Tundra full-size pickup market, its share is still very small. This is not the same as Nissan’s share, which fell 16.1% year-over-year on the titan.
Since the debut of the new Ram 1500 a few years ago, Chevrolet and Ram have fought for second place. However, both brands have now closed the gap to Ford. It will be interesting to see what 2021 sales look like, with the Blue Oval reporting high demand.
