ZRX may be a red herring, but off-road upgrades remain the same.
Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. Ram 1500 TRX. The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 is now available. For some time we’ve been discussing a Silverado ZRX, but ZR2 could become the badge that General’s full-size, off-road-ready vehicle finally arrives in showrooms. We now have some details about what that could entail.
According to a new report, the rumor is true. Muscle Cars and Trucks The website claims to have the inside scoop on truck development. This is also supported by a bizarrely badass. Silverado “Tactical Concept” was just added to the official Instagram account General Motors Design. This information is consistent with previous rumors about the truck’s modified suspension. However, ZR2 appears to have better brand equity than ZRX. This is something we can’t dispute.
Chevrolet needs a competitor to the F150 Raptor and 1500 TRX. It might even be more impressive to have one with unique styling that stands out from the rest. Although we doubt that it will look as insane as this tactical idea, could there be some clues in this image?
What will the Silverado ZR2 look like under the skin? According to the report, the truck was seen last year at SEMA. Although it was initially unveiled as a Chad Hall racing truck and its underpinnings were allegedly the Silverado ZR2 foundation, it flew under the radar. Multimatic DSSV dampers have a slightly higher ride height, locking diffs front and back, ZR2-specific bumpers front and rear for better approach/departure angles, skid plates and aggressive off-road tires complete the look.
Crazy horsepower is what the report states you won’t find in the ZR2. Rumours have circulated that GM is developing a supercharged 6.2 liter V8 for its Chevrolet, GMC trucks. However, this package won’t include it initially. It will likely have the same 6.2-liter V8 as you can now. The truck’s 420 horsepower makes it fast. The Ram offers 702 horsepower for the TRX, and Ford is reportedly going further with a Shelby GT500’s 756-hp engine. This will make the ZR2 much more powerful.
Chevrolet may be able to benefit from the short timeframe for the offroader. The delay in vehicle development due to Coronavirus is evident. Accordingly, the ZR2 is now scheduled for the 2023 model year. The truck will be launched after the Silverado update next year. This gives engineers the opportunity to explore a supercharged option or, depending on the TRX’s success, to reevaluate whether they need such power.
