China: BMW 5 Series Li Long-Wheelbase Version Revealed

At least for the moment, it’s China-only.

BMW will use 2017 Auto Shanghai as its new Chinese model to showcase the latest additions to its lineup. The 5 Series Li, a long-wheelbase version of the premium sedan, will be available exclusively in the People’s Republic.

The new Li version is slightly shorter than the 7 Series and is 5.2 inches longer (13.3 cms). The extra space will be used by the rear passengers, who will enjoy more legroom.

BMW will offer the vehicle as a Luxury Line trim. This includes Nappa leather and Bowers & Wilkins’ audio system, two 10.25-inch screens on the front headrests, and a rear armrest that houses a tablet. The latter acts as a control centre for the majority of the car’s infotainment functions.

Three gasoline engines will also be available. Two turbos of 2.0-liter capacity will produce 224 horsepower (165kilowatts), 252 hp (285 kW) and respectively, 525 Li and Li 530 Li. A larger turbo turbo of 3.0 liters with 340 HP (250 kW), in the 540 Li. They will all work only with an eight speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels.

The new 5 Series Li will come with the Luxury Line trim and an optional M Sport aerodynamic package. You will find all the standard M Sport bits such as bigger wheels, bumpers and side skirts.

CarNewsChina reports that the 5 Series Li will be available in China during Q3 2017. Prices range from 450,000 to 750,000 Yuan (roughly $65,300 to $108,715 depending on current exchange rates). The Bavarian company has not yet made any comment about whether the model could be launched outside of China.
