The next generation rally-bred sedan has arrived.
We have a new official debut date set for the next-generation Subaru WRX. This is after a slight delay due to the cancellation of the 2021 New York Auto Show. Keep September 10 as the date, Subie has something else planned to welcome its new road-going rally car.
Another WRX teaser image was released along with the announcement. However, it is one that we have already seen. The teaser photo, along with other spy photos images, leaves little to imagination. The sedan’s form won’t change much from the current model. A six-speed manual transmission is also available, as confirmed by Subaru in a previous teaser. Although details of the engine have not been confirmed, it is widely believed to be the FA24 turbocharged flat-four. It could produce up to 300 horsepower (224 milliwatts).
The original launch date for the car was August 19. Subarubasically allowed itself another month to refine and tease its strategy to bring this timeless rally-themed sedan to the market. This could prove pivotal as there have been concerns about Subaru’s conservative styling and lack of character for both the current WRX and the forthcoming model.
The automaker also draws heavily from its roots in the World Rally Championship, even though it left the series more than ten years ago. Subaru is still a prominent participant in the US rally scene via the American Rally Association.
Talk of the next STI version has also been sparked by the new WRX. An STI model with a higher power output (300 hp) would be possible if the WRX is increased to 300 hp (298 kW). Early rumors have suggested such a machine. However, a more recent report suggests that the same 2.4-liter engine produces only 345 horsepower (257 kW). The rumor is that or less would result in a subaru-wrx-sti-brz-rumor. However, in a small engine like the 2.4-liter WRX that would still be enough to produce free powerlides in gravel.
