Continental AmbienC3 Interior Design Is A Sleepy Volkswagen T2 For Tomorrow

You know what the drill is: minimalist design, light colors, self-cleaning material.

The 2021 Munich Motor Show does not have everything new. There are many classics, like this Volkswagen T2 van. They can be found among wild concept cars such as the BMW i Vision or production EVs such as the Mercedes EQB. You’ll find that this party bus is anything but a classic.

This is AmbienC3, a concept by Continential that showcases both its future vision and the latest materials for vehicle interiors. We don’t know whether Continental deliberately chose to name the AmbienC3 after a popular sleeping aid, but it is clear that this concept focuses on creating a peaceful and relaxing environment for travelers. It also highlights sustainability by using recycled and synthetic materials that Continental has developed, which have some very interesting properties.

What properties are we referring to? Continental’s press release states that some materials can generate heat while others are resistant to abrasion and have self-healing qualities. One type of synthetic leather, laif, is extremely breathable. It allows air and water to pass through it while also being soft and temperature-regulating. A second material, staynu is also available (stay-new… get it?). It is used on the driver’s seat and, as its name implies, is extremely resistant to dirt or stains.

The driver’s seat is the only one that can be mounted in a conventional passenger car position. Even then, it’s no traditional seat. Continental’s AmbienC3 is a vehicle that incorporates occupant-friendly “third spaces” where people can drive, work and relax. The AmbienC3 can be fully autonomously driven, and the van will handle the commute. The bright, yet soft colors create a feeling of relaxation. However, there won’t be any accidents in the future as no seat belts are seen.

Ralf Imbery is the global director for innovation, transformation and design at Continental. “With the AmbienC3, we are connecting a globally-respected icon of the automotive industry with new, interesting surfaces and future focused technologies, whose attributes aid driving, working and relaxing as well as distinguish them through color and design,” he said. The AmbienC3 is a demonstration of our expertise in sustainability, design, functionality and customer centricity. We are bringing together key drivers to the future mobile interior.

AmbienC3 will be displayed at IAA Mobility 2021, Munch, September 12-12.
