Custom vans are a favorite of Motor1.com. They’re especially great when they can be taken off-road for extended off grid adventures. Denver-based Vanlife Customs made this 2016 Mercedes Benz Sprinter. It’s nicknamed Pops because of its cool motorized pop-top roof, which allows occupants to relax after a day of hiking, biking and other adventure activities.
Red Bull requested the build for their 2019 Vanlife Experience contest. A couple was awarded a week of adventure travel in the American West. We get to see the van up close. It’s impressive work. Although it’s small enough for city streets, the van has a spacious bed and impressive off-road capabilities thanks to its Fox suspension upgrade. The van’s exterior upgrades include trail lights, a grille guard and an awning. The Merc’s lithium battery can provide 200 amp-hours of power. It should be sufficient to run the interior for two days. However, 160 watts can be used on the roof to charge the battery with solar power. A 2,000-watt inverter provides 110-volt AC power to interior devices. The engine alternator can also be used to charge the battery.

The van’s living space is the core of its appeal. A full kitchen is available with a 2-burner induction stove, as well as a small sink which can be covered with a cuttingboard for additional counter space. The back holds 20 gallons worth of fresh water, while 20 gallons are stored under the sink. A wall of drawers and storage cabinets behind the kitchen can double as a workspace. Hidden inside the kitchen is a flat-screen TV that can be used as a screen for a laptop or PC.
