Wow, what an impressive level of ground clearance.
Although we don’t see it often, the rough-and-tumble MercedesBenz G-Class is a popular upfit. This is especially true for those who are more adventurous and want to travel in remote places. These vehicles are extremely difficult to drive off-road. This is where the Off Road Center (ORC), Germany, has created a custom G-Class. YouTuber Alan Heath spotted the latest project at an RV show in 4×4 not far from Frankfurt, and decided to take a closer look.
We don’t have much information about the mechanical aspects of this project. ORC describes it as an exclusive build. The company makes many off-road campers similar to the G-Class, but this one is more suited for RV duty than others. The vehicle is lifted and equipped with aggressive off-road tires. If you need to crawl through the country, there’s a sturdy winch.
Instead of blending in with the G-Class accommodations, the entire area behind the front seats has been removed and replaced by a comfortable camping module. Accessible through a narrow side door, the cozy camping module is accessible from the inside. The raised-roof living space provides ample room for standing while adding more sleeping space via a drop-down mattress. The dining area can be converted to a second bedroom at the back. A handy pull-out stove, sink, and compact kitchen are also available. Across from that is a refrigerator with extra storage space around it; for that matter, storage abounds in the sparse-yet-functional camper, and unlike many such module conversions, there’s still a pass-through the front cockpit area.
ORC’s website reveals many custom builds that look similar to this G-Class. Prices will vary depending on what you need in an overlander, but the black monster we see here is not cheap.
