DeLorean Alpha5 revealed as an electric coupe with 300 miles of range

Italdesign created the largest gullwing doors that we have ever seen.

DeLorean is back, and ready to embrace the future with the all-new Alpha5. Italdesign designed this model to look like the DMC-12, its inspiration. As the rest of the design is modern, the only nods to the past are the top-hinged massive doors with rear glass louvers and the front door.

It has large wheels and slim rear and front lights, keeping in line with the current EVs. The curvaceous body houses the charging port on driver’s side front bumper. This eliminates the need to open the trunk to get to the gasoline cap. The Alpha5 features a two-tone exterior and a swoopy roofline that is reminiscent of the car featured in the Back to the Future trilogy.

The flux capacitor has been replaced by two separate rear seats. It is the same as the new high-end EVs. The touchscreen has all the controls embedded in it. A large digital instrument cluster is available to the driver. The steering wheel is flat-bottomed. Given the wide gullwing doors and absence of a B pillar, accessing the rear seats should not be difficult.

DeLorean is not giving out any details on the drivertrain. However, it states that the Alpha5 requires 3.4 seconds to reach 60 mph (96 km/h), and tops out electronically at 150 mph (241 km/h). The battery pack has a capacity greater than 100 kWh and can provide an EPA-estimated range of over 300 miles (483 km). All these specifications are for the base performance model, suggesting that hotter versions may be on the horizon.

The electric coupe also has a remarkable drag coefficient of 0.23. This is lower than the 0.20 achieved by Mercedes with its EQS liftback. Thankfully, there’s no underpowered V6 gasoline engine from Peugeot-Renault-Volvo anymore, replaced with an unspecified electric setup that’ll go from 0 to 88 mph (142 km/h) in 4.35 seconds after which it probably won’t time travel.

It is much larger than its ancestor at 4,995 mm (196.6 inches), 2,044mm (80.4 in), and 1,370mm (53.9 in) high when the gullwing door is closed. DeLorean claims it has outsourced production in Italy, while the powertrain will come from a UK supplier.

Only 88, of course! There will only be 88 cars made. A V8-powered sports coupe will follow. If all goes according to plan, there will be an electric sedan and a hydrogen-powered SUV in the extended lineup. The DeLorean Alpha5 will go into production in 2024 after its public debut at Pebble Beach in August.
