The Demon won’t win all three races.
The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon can rocket down drag strips at an amazingly fast pace. A new video addresses the burning question of whether the rear-drive vehicle has enough power to compete with an all-wheel-drive Lamborghini Uracan on the strip.
The Challenger Demon is finished in a subtle shade of dark green, similar to the Mustang Bullitt. However, this hue suits Dodge’s muscle car very well. The vehicle is in stock condition with Mickey Thompson tires replacing the stock Nittos. It also has the full race setup of 840 horsepower (626 Kilowatts).
Stock Huracan LP610-4 also has 602 hp (449 kW), from its 5.2-liter, V10. You might be tempted to believe that the Demon will blow it away on the strip with its 238-hp (276-kW) deficit. Keep in mind, however, that the Lamborghini is over 700 pounds (318 kg) lighter than the Challenger and that the all-wheel drive system gives the Lamborghini a significant traction advantage, particularly off the line.
The two machines will be racing in three races. But, here’s the spoiler: the Lambo wins the first race. The Demon driver turns the wheels and the Huracan races away. Even with this error, the Challenger completes the quarter-mile in 11.5 seconds. The Lamborghini takes 10.7 seconds. You can see the video to see how fast the Demon is if the tires are properly connected to the asphalt.
However, the Demon can be used if the driver is having trouble getting traction. A recent video showed the Dodge facing a 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 equipped with drag radials. The ‘Vette won the quarter-mile in 10.2 seconds, compared to a surprising 11.59 seconds for the Challenger.
The Demon’s performance and one-year production runs could make it a vehicle that has a lasting appeal, similar to the 1969 COPO Camaro or Buick GNX. The last Dodge Demon will be sold at an auction in June.
