Dodge Charger and Challenger with Hemi Power are the most stolen vehicles Highway Loss Data Institue conducts a study about theft using muscle machines. Remember Dodge’s slogan for Hemi-powered cars from a few years ago? According to Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), Hemi-powered Dodge Chargers or Challengers are the most likely vehicles to be stolen. These rides actually have theft claims rates that are five times higher than the average 2016-2018 model-year vehicle. Matt Moore, Senior Vice President of HLDI, stated that the models most susceptible to being stolen are those with high prices, pickups, and powerful engines. However, vehicle theft is also a crime for which there are many opportunities. Better security features for all vehicles would be the best solution to the problem. The Dodge Charger sedan equipped with the Hemi V8 is at the top of the list. Close behind it is the Challenger. The Infiniti midsize SUV is third in this list, despite being surrounded by large V8-powered machines. Infiniti also takes fourth place with its QX80 SUV. The GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab rounds out the top five. The BMW 3 Series, which is also the most stolen, is followed by two vehicles from Tesla, the Model S, and the ModelX. HLDI refers to the low theft rate of electric cars as being stored near or inside buildings for charging purposes. However, these vehicles are still quite common in the grand scheme. The Chevrolet Equinox, Buick Encore round out the top five list of most stolen vehicles. Crime Doesn’t Pay: HLDI looked at total-loss claims and insurance claims for theft to calculate the list. This eliminates theft claims for individual parts of vehicles, such as wheels. However, it does not exclude vehicle thefts that were found with minimal damage.
