Spoiler alert! The yellow car wins.
Our Dragtimes friends are back with a new drag race video. It’s a great one. This is not because of the new Ford GT or a Dodge Challenger RT Demon but because both cars are bright yellow. There is a clear winner at end, but the speeds are astonishingly close given the different performance genres these cars use.
The action is also good because it takes place on a half-mile runway instead of a quarter-mile drag strip. The Wannagofast event, appropriately named, took place last weekend at Immokalee in Florida. As the video shows there was plenty of cars available for the action. The race wasn’t just about a line-up and go. Organisers had a tree at the start line with timing lights and speed readings for the quarter-mile as well as the half-mile.
The cars featured in the video were both stock. The Demon was set up to unleash its full 840-horsepower (626 kW) drag strip punch. The Demon might seem to have an advantage because the GT only produces 647 horsepower (482 kW) but the Demon was designed to dominate a quarter-mile of drag strip. The Demon doesn’t like an unprepped runway. However, at higher speeds than the quarter-mile mark, Ford GTs smoother shapes could be an advantage.
We took a few screenshots of the video and they most likely tell the story. The speeds of both cars are what the photos don’t show. Each driver was able to spin off the line at will, but both cars averaged 157 mph by the end of the half mile. Both cars ran almost identically at the quarter mile mark. The GT ran 129.34 mph while the Demon ran 128.93. Talk about close.
You can see the entire action in the video. Stay tuned for more. Dragtimes features a lot of races, including the McLaren 720S. We’ll feature them as soon they are available.
