Earthcruiser Announces New Isuzu-Based Overland Platform with GM V8 Motor

It will be the foundation of the next-generation EXP/FX models.

EarthCruiser is America’s largest manufacturer of overland vehicles and has moved to a new platform. The Isuzu NPR series Class 4 platform replaces the Fuso platform. The next-generation EXP, FX EarthCruiser and CORE models will be covered by this change. The company blends the new architecture with its 4×4 drivetrain to create the “most agile and capable vehicle” in its class. EarthCruiser claims that the new Isuzu platform is the perfect size for this type of vehicle and offers solid performance and reliability. According to the firm, this is the only all-wheel-drive cab-over vehicle in this market in the United States. The Isuzu platform was built in Charlotte, Michigan using a 6.6-liter V8 engine. General Motors produced the engine, which has a maximum output of 350 horsepower. It also produces 425 pound-feet torque. The unit is used in GM’s Heavy Duty pickup trucks.

EarthCruiser claims that the platform’s cab-over design provides “unmatched” visibility which is useful in off-road conditions. Models built on such platforms have impressive maneuverability. The most important thing about an overlanding camping vehicle is its ability to be as small as possible while still allowing for the greatest living space.

EarthCruiser has developed its own four-wheel drive system to transfer the power of GM’s V8 engine. It was built with commonly available components from the industry. According to the company, the 6.6-liter engine is compatible with EarthCruiser’s custom gearing and produces high low-end torque while on the trail.

It wasn’t easy to adapt the Isuzu platform for the all-wheel drive. Although the platform was designed to support one driving axle, EarthCruiser modified the platform to accommodate its 4×4 system. The company removes the stock chassis, replaces the suspension, driveline, and installs an Atlas transfer case Fusion axle with Auburn electronically locking differentials. EarthCruiser says it will continue to support the Fuso-based models through service and maintenance.
