Turbo S versions will also be available.
Following the Taycan launch, we all know an all-electric Macan will soon be available. A press release from Porsche confirmed this. We don’t know how the Macan will be constructed or how fast the electric version could travel.
A report by Autocar This article aims to shed some light on the matter. Julian Baumann, Porsche’s director for SUVs, stated that the all-electric SUV will be sold alongside Macans with internal combustion engines to please both types of SUV buyers. Baumann, Porsche’s director of SUVs, agreed that some customers aren’t ready for EVs.
The electric Macan will, however, be completely different than its predecessor. It will be built on top of Taycan’s platform, with only minor modifications for SUV use. The same report also states that the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE), architecture for the Macan is the Volkswagen Group. It was developed from Taycan’s J1 platform.
The challenges faced in developing an electric Macan are similar to those encountered with the Taycan. These include aerodynamics and battery weight as well as all the other challenges that a battery-powered car can bring. Baumann stated that even though the platform is completely different, the electric Macan will still retain its DNA, which will mean that it will remain the most sporty model in its class.
The Electric Future of Porsche
Baumann stated that the most powerful 2020 Macan model, the Turbo and Turbo S, will produce approximately 700 horsepower (525 KiloWatts) as well as 750 pound-feet (1.017 Nm), torque. Similar to the Taycan’s Taycan, power will be transmitted to all four wheels by two motors that power each axle. In the Macan’s lifetime, less powerful versions will also be available.
Porsche is also considering using solid-state batteries in its cars. However, it will take five to seven more years before they are available for the market.
