Elvis paid approximately $55,000 for the Mercedes luxury sedan.
If you think about Elvis Presley’s relationship to automobiles, your thoughts will likely go immediately to his love for Cadillacs and giving them as gifts. Elvis was also a fan of Mercedes-Benz, even though he didn’t drive American luxury cars. The 1971 Mercedes 280SEL is still in perfect condition and is available for purchase in St. Louis, Missouri for $139,900. The paperwork proving the original owner of the sedan shows the rock legend.
Elvis bought the 280SEL for $8,764 on December 21, 1970 – which is the equivalent to $54,828 in current money. Tennessee’s scorching summers were made more bearable by the optional air conditioning. The luxury sedan also featured power windows and a Becker Europa radio. The original color of the car was dark red. However, Elvis changed it to Alpha Crystal Blue Metallic. This color is perfect for the vintage Mercedes.
The SEL model had a wheelbase four inches longer than the SE model and was therefore more rare. It produced 8,350 units for the 280SEL and 91,051 for the 280 SE, according to Mercedes. The 2.8-liter inline six with mechanical fuel injection produced 158 horsepower (118 megawatts). Elvis bought his car with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Elvis’s entourage used the Mercedes for 80,312 miles before he died in August 1977. The sedan was displayed at a Tennessee museum until Elvis’ death in August 1977. The beautiful sedan with celebrity origins is now available for sale.
