Engineering Explained Reviews Honda Civic Type R’s Motor

Details are the devil.

The Honda Civic Type R hot hatch is one of very few on the market that has only two driving wheels. While all-wheel drive systems are used by many competitors, such as the Ford Focus RS or Volkswagen Golf R, it doesn’t mean they are better performance vehicles. A good sports car needs a great engine. The Type R isn’t just a leader in terms of the motor; it’s also likely to set the standard for this segment.

A new video from Engineering explained reveals more about the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the Civic Type R. It’s amazing. It has 306 horsepower (228 Kilowatts) as well as 295 pound-feet (405 Newton-meters) torque. This engine is very efficient and fuel-efficient, with a combined consumption rate of 25 MPG.

The K20C1 engine has a smart architecture that uses an aluminum cylinder block with cylinder head. The head houses the exhaust manifold, which is a weight-saving solution, improves turbo response and reduces emissions. Honda Formula 1 engines also use the same cooling technology.

Honda claims that the 2.0-liter engine features a traditional design, with low-inertia overhead camshafts and a chain. The chain is meant to last the life of the engine so maintenance is not necessary. Did you also know that the exhaust valves are filled with sodium to keep them cool?

It’s a direct-injection engine, and Honda claims that this fuel delivery method has increased torque throughout the entire range of rpm. This is combined with smaller sparkplugs to reduce weight and increase the space in the combustion chamber.

It sounds fascinating, doesn’t? You can see the entire video above to learn more about Honda’s turbo engine 2.0-liter.
