It was a wonderful meeting of minds.
Your eyes don’t lie. The GMC Hummer EVO will use the Unreal Engine to provide an unforgettable infotainment experience. You won’t be welcomed by the Unreal Tournament announcer when you enter, but that’s not a problem. Epic Games, yes, we know they are responsible for Fortnite. Now, an initiative called Human-Machine Interface has been introduced to assist automakers in creating a high-quality user experience.
Scott Martin, Creative Director for User Interface Design at GM, stated that Unreal Engine will be used in the GMC Hummer EV to provide richer graphics, which will celebrate the vehicle and its customers. “We are thrilled to use Unreal Engine within our cockpit and look forward sharing more details on the vehicle’s unveiling on October 20th.
Why spend so much money on fancy infotainment screens when you can have the best features? It’s not just a way to grab attention and get the vehicle moving. Epic Games has partnered with industry giants such as Mapbox, Qualcomm Technologies Inc. and Siili Auto to create an easier way for automotive companies to build in-vehicle experiences.
It won’t take long to implement the game engine, which supports many hardware platforms, including the Qualcomm(r), Snapdragon(tm), Automotive Platform. HMI partners such as Vectorform’s customer service platforms and Siili Auto’s custom infotainment system will also be supported.
Clemens Conrad from Vectorform, Executive Experience Director, stated that Unreal Engine’s Blueprints visual scribing system allows designers to build projects without having to write a single line. It makes the entire process faster and reduces the time iterations.
The UnrealEngine has been used by automakers to offer a next-level car configurator experience. It provides a much higher level of visual fidelity than other, more vanilla experiences.
Epic is only beginning to get the ball rolling. However, Epic plans to release more HMI-specific features over the next few months and into 2021. We are excited to see where the future takes us and how interior car experiences evolve.
