Exec Confirms Toyota Corolla GRMN, It's Not A Hybrid

The Corolla GRMN hot-hatch will arrive around mid-cycle of the current model’s generation.

In an interview with Dutch website AutoRAI, the Toyota Deputy Chief Design confirmed that a Corolla GRMN hot-hat is in the works. Contrary to most of the speculation, however, the fast machine won’t be using a hybrid performance-tuned powertrain.

Kanei stated that while we are still investigating the best option for Europe, a Corolla GTRMN is realistic. We are already working on this. Toyota Gazoo Racing oversees the development. The Corolla GRMN has been included in the future plans, but the project is currently in the planning phase.

Kanei states categorically that the Toyota Corolla GRMN doesn’t get a hybrid powertrain. Kanei suggests that the model could be equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder of 1.6-liters. This is a suggestion that “can be very interesting.”

Kanei believes that the Corolla GRMN will arrive in the middle of the production run for the current model. While the development of the chassis should take a short time, the powertrain engineering will require a longer lead time. To decide whether the hot hatch will be offered in each country, Toyota plans to assess the market. We can’t rule out Toyota offering the Corolla Hatchback in other countries.

Since 2017 , rumors have been swirling about Toyota’s plans to bring back the Corolla in a performance version (older render below). In 2018, multiple reports suggested that the model was being developed with a 2.0 liter hybrid powerplant. Toyota’s corporate philosophy seems to favor electrified layouts.
