F-150 Lightning Towing Test – Range when pulling camper trailer

The owner shared some insight about his driving experience during towing.

The Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck is highly capable. The F-150 Lightning can carry payloads up to 2,235 lbs (1,014 kg), and the towing capacity can reach 10,000 lbs (4,536kg), depending on which battery it uses.

These numbers are quite acceptable, but one might wonder how hauling could impact the F-150’s range. Nicholas Schmidt, a Lightning Platinum owner, put his new electric truck through its paces and posted his results on his blog Geeky Schmidt.

Schmidt tested an F150 Lightning Platinum, which was equipped with all Ford features including the Tow Technology Package and Extended Range Battery. His all-electric truck can be used for hauling.

Schmidt stated that the Airstream camper trailer that he hauled was approximately 6,000 lbs (2.722 kg), loaded with gear and 20 gallons fresh water. Schmidt is the sole occupant of the truck. The drive was flat without hills.

The range of the trailer was 85 miles (137 km) before Schmidt connected it to the truck. The Lightning automatically calculated the range after entering the dimensions of the trailer onto it. He said that the trailer connects to the system and he sees a 0.8 mi/kWh, which is about half the 1.5-1.8 mi/kWh he gets without the Airstream camper.

The F-150 Lightning equipped the extended-range battery has an approximate range of up to 325 miles (515 km). The truck can be powered by the standard battery for up to 230 miles (370 km).

Schmidt shared his insights on the towing experience.

It is a great experience to tow. You can tow with ease thanks to the instant torque. It is almost like you forget that you have so much weight behind your vehicle as you accelerate.
