F1 teams are close together to agreeing on a new engine formula starting in 2013.
The development of the current V8s with a 2.4 litre displacement will be halted. They will eventually be replaced by smaller engines that consume less fuel, emit less polluting gases, and are more affordable.
Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo reported that an in-principle agreement was reached for a four-cylinder 1.5-litre engine with twin-turbo and injectable.
According to reports, the new formula will also include KERS.
Amedeo Felisa, Ferrari CEO, stated that F1 must develop something useful for road driving conditions.
He said, “That’s what we would support.”
Norbert Haug, Mercedes’ Mercedes spokesperson, agrees that smaller engines will be more efficient for both emissions and consumption. However, he warns that high-tech technology must remain the main focus.
“If you fly from Europe and Japan on a 747, it would take more fuel than an entire F1 Season. He insisted that we need to see the whole picture.
