FCA Recalls 363k Dodge Journey Crossovers For Airbag Issues

Another 442,000 vehicles are affected by an alternator recall.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has recalled over 800,000.00 vehicles in two separate recalls. These recalls are due to alternator and airbag problems. Although you might expect more bad news from Takata, this time, the issue with Takata’s airbags is not related to faulty inflators. FCA states that the driver’s side airbag could be deployed unexpectedly due to faulty wiring in an older Dodge Journey crossover.

The recall covers 363,480 Dodge Journeys that were manufactured between 2011 and 2015 and are sold across North America. The total number of affected vehicles includes 120,336 Canadian-made Dodge Journeys and 54,072 Mexican-made. FCA also identified additional 232,965 Fiat Freemont Crossovers between 2011 and 2015 that could be at risk from the same danger. These vehicles are also subject of the recall.

Problem is with the wiring in the steering column. This could cause damage to steering-wheel trim over time and lead to a short circuit. FCA states that this could cause a second short-circuit which could possibly lead to the driver’s airbag being deployed. FCA warns that there may be warning signs to indicate an issue with the wiring before airbag deployment. Short circuits can cause the light to turn on when the wiring is damaged. This could also happen with non-functional switches or random operation of windshield wipers.

Although there have not been any deaths or accidents, FCA says it is aware of five minor injuries which could be caused by the wiring. It is not clear if this involves airbag deployment. FCA is recalling 442,214 vehicles due to alternator problems. This could lead to vehicle stalling. Premature diode wear is the main problem, especially in hot weather. This recall applies to 2011-2014 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans as well as Dodge Challenger, Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokees that were manufactured between 2012 and 2014.

To schedule appointments, the manufacturer will contact affected customers by first-class mail. Both repairs are free of charge. The airbag problem will be fixed with new wiring and additional protection. FCA has not provided any details about the alternator solution.
