Ferrari names Penske and Ganassi as ideal third-car partners

Luca di Montezemolo named two prominent American motor racing names as his ideal partners for a third Ferrari in Formula One.

Luca di Montezemolo named two prominent American motor racing names as his ideal partners for a third Ferrari in Formula One.

Maranello-based marque’s president has been a frequent critic of F1’s struggling smallest builders, arguing this week that it is “better to have a (Ferrari third car) with a competitive team rather than a team that can’t even do GP2”.

“I believe it’s commonsense and Bernie Ecclestone concurs. Who would run the third Ferrari? He told reporters in Italy that it was a small, but highly competitive team.

Autosprint, an Italian magazine, has more details on Montezemolo’s plans. It revealed that Ferrari would like its third car to be up and running by 2013.

Stefano Domenicali, team boss, is currently in London to attend the meeting of FOTA (F1 Teams Association).

According to the report, “The teams are currently talking with the FIA about the possibility (of three vehicles) within three years.”

Montezemolo said: “It would have been nice to see a third Ferrari being fielded by an American private team. Penske or Ganassi are two options that I consider.

He said, “On the issue of a third vehicle, we are determined.”

Italian press quotes Montezemolo as saying, “If a team doesn’t have the money to go in formula one they can go to GP2.”

Trulli is so slow it’s disheartening. Imagine Jarno’s potential with a Ferrari for his team.

Italian Trulli drives the Tony Fernandes-run Team Lotus. It finished its inaugural season in 2010 as the highest placed of all three new teams.

Some teams, including Williams, were against Ferrari’s proposal to allow third cars into F1.

Montezemolo said, “Ecclestone agrees, and Frank Williams, who was opposed to it before, now understands.”

“Don’t ya think it would be great to see Penske or Ganassi use a Ferrari with an American driver?” He asked rhetorically.
