Sport Bild, a German weekly, reports that Volkswagen, the carmaker titan, plans to enter Formula One in 2015.
Peter Sauber, the Sauber team boss, confirmed that he met Martin Winterkorn, VW’s chairman, at the Geneva motor show.
Monisha Kaltenborn, the chief executive of the Swiss team, denied that there was more to this story.
Sport Bild reported that Volkswagen plans to join F1 with Sauber. This Sauber-based team won a grand prix together with BMW in the 2006-2009 collaboration.
According to the report, the FIA was informed about the VW-Sauber plans. Wolfsburg-based VW reportedly wants to increase its presence on the top car markets in China and the US.
Sport Bild said that Sauber could be a “stepping stone into F1” for VW. The marque is also interested in designing F1 chassis at its state-of-the-art Porsche Motorsport Centre in Weissach.
