First Look: 2021 Mercedes-Maybach SL580 Debuts with Garish, Posh Style

Are you too rough on the Mercedes-Benz S580? The new Maybach will be a hit.

The 2021 Mercedes Benz S Class was shown to us a few months back. But, even then, we knew that the company didn’t intend on letting things slide. The 2021 Mercedes Maybach, a new member in the sedan family, is now available. The Maybach, with its larger rear seat and heavy chrome styling, is the luxury darling of the company.
The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, like its predecessor, will compete with the Bentley Flying Spur HTML8 and Rolls-Royce Ghost. The 2021 sedan may be a bargain compared to the Brits, even though its base price will rise from $173,000 2020 S560. Mercedes does not want Maybach customers to feel that they are sacrificing anything in order to save money. So the Maybach S580 was loaded with every luxury component, beginning with the back seat.

Deals in the Backroom

Before you step foot inside, the Maybach experience is complete. The new Rolls Royce Ghost can have the rear doors extended electrically. This is done using the car’s blind spot monitors, which prevents door dings. You can also operate the doors from your front seat. Doormen, get ready to brush up on your resumes, these machines are here.

A 7.1-inch wheelbase stretch allows passengers to enjoy a bigger cabin once they are on board. VIPs are not required to share the space with the front seats. The extra space between the wheels is reserved for the rear cabin. Individually adjustable bucket seats are standard in the back. They have backrests that adjust from 19 to 44 degrees, and a deployable leg rest for the passenger. The “chauffeur” mode, which allows the right rear occupant of the seat to move the front seat forward and out the way, is available again. This gives enough space for a 6-foot-3 passenger, who can stretch out.

The Maybach has heating, cooling, and multicontour massage for every position. Heated armrests, door panels, and heated armrests make it a comfortable cabin even on cold days. The rear seat footrest now includes a calf massage. This is a peak in hedonism. Every Mercedes-Maybach will be a pleasant place to spend time. However, an Executive Rear Seat package can be purchased by more distinguished owners. It includes more wood trim, a full-length console and deployable tray tables. Optional options include a rear-seat champagne cooler, and custom solid-metal flutes.

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class was the first generation of MBUX infotainment. The Maybach S580 is the successor to the S-Class’ two. It features five infotainment screens, one front and two rear, and two 12.3-inch digital instrument clusters. A removable tablet can dock in the center console.

Peerless Panache

Rolls-Royce’s Ghost is all about “post-opulence”, which means minimal styling and simple lines. Maybach, however, seems to be moving in the opposite direction. The Mercedes’ distinctive grille features dozens of vertical slats that are thin and streamlined. A bright-finished front bumper air intake further enhances the effect. Chrome window trim wraps around the side and B-pillar. A Maybach-specific triangular rear window makes a return for 2021, to emphasize the vehicle’s increased length.

Maybach’s 21-inch optional wheels are designed to look like champagne flutes. However, we prefer the 20-inch standard wheels with a retro “monoblock” design. We also like the sleeker faces of the AMG GLS63’s optional monos. The Maybach logo is illuminated on the rear pillar. This sets it apart from other S-Class sedans. It also emphasizes its traditional, formal roofline. Mercedes is proud of the Maybach’s ten two-tone paint options, including the Kalahari Gold or Rubellite Red combinations seen in our first look video.

The Maybach team made it a point to include the chauffeur in the fun. This was partly due to a standard twin-turbocharged 4.0 liter V8 with EQ Boost mild hybrid technology. The 4Matic all-wheel drive system and the nine-speed automatic transmission should deliver all 496 horsepower (and 516 pound-feet) and 370 kilowatts (370 kilowatts, 700 newton meters) efficiently. But, power is lower than the 550-hp (405-kw), 538-lb-ft (729Nm) and 2021 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600.

The S580 may not be enough for you. Mercedes has confirmed to motor1.com that a Maybach S-Class, an all-wheel-drive, V12-powered Maybach S-Class, will soon arrive. More information will be available closer to the Maybach’s release date.

Rear-axle steering can turn the wheels up to 11 degrees, which reduces the turning radius by 7 feet. This is a huge advantage in urban areas. A standard head-up display with augmented reality navigation, which projects driving directions onto the windshield, points out exits and addresses, is also available to assist the driver. There’s also a trim-exclusive Maybach driving mode, which is even more comfortable than the standard S sedan’s Comfort setting.

The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S580 is expected to arrive at US dealers by the middle of next. Although the price of the S-Class models has not been announced, we believe it will split the difference between the S560 V8 model and the S650 V12 model. We expect to spend at least $185,000 for this pleasure.

The Maybach S580 is a flagship Mercedes sedan with a snazzy exterior and an interior that’s tech-forward. It should also continue the tradition set by its Maybach 57, 62 and 600 Grosser predecessors. We are eager to take the wheel or ride along with someone else while they drive.
