BMW will make significant changes to their naming system in 2013. 2013 will be an important year. The 2-Series name will be given to the coupe and convertible 1-Series models. The same principle will apply to the 3-Series, which will become a 4-Series Coupe or Convertible. GranCoupe versions will likely join these in the future.
These photos are the first of the 2-Series Coupe. It will be based upon the 1-Series hatchback, so it will use its engine lineup and most tech. BMW claimed that it would be more sporty than the 1-Series Coupe but it will still have the same four-cylinder engines. A 2.0-liter gasoline engine will offer 150 horsepower (112 kW), 171 hp (122 kW), and 218hp (163kW) respectively. There will also be a turbocharged diesel of 2.0 liters that produces 214hp (160kW).
These engines can be linked to either a 6-speed manual gearbox, or an optional 8 speed automatic. BMW will offer its xDrive all-wheel driving system in the upcoming 2-Series lineup.
The 2-Series Coupe will debut in the latter half of 2013, with its Convertible counterpart coming out sometime in 2014.
