For car insurance savings, man can become a woman

He/she just wanted to purchase a Chevrolet Cruze but his gender would be very expensive.

Gender appropriation is not a new concept. Often, women are the ones who suffer. There are many feminist groups that aim to change the status quo in gender equality. However, the debate about who is right and who is wrong should be a completely different topic. It seems, however, that there is a different kind of gender appropriation in Canada. This CBC news story reveals that younger men (below 25 years old) receive higher premiums for car insurance policies.

A 23-year-old male on the shorter end of a stick attempted to beat the system and won. CBC news named him David. Let’s not forget that. David, an Alberta resident, wanted to purchase a fully-equipped Chevrolet Cruze. He didn’t know that his driving record, which included a collision, and a ticket, pushed his premium up to CAD 4500 ($3,442) per year. He had an idea. He asked his insurance company about the cost of his coverage if he was married. The answer was: The answer is CAD 3.400 ($2,600), which would allow him to save approximately CAD 1.100 ($841) per year or CAD 91 ($70/month). This is enough money to fuel him for at least two or more weeks.

“I was very angry about that. He said, “I didn’t want to get screwed over anymore.”David, like any angry person, did his research to find out how he could change his gender on the insurance policy. He needed to first get a note from his doctor stating that he prefers to be identified by a woman in his documents. The provincial government processed it. After a few weeks, he got his new birth certificate which showed that he was a woman. He then updated his driver’s licence and, eventually, his insurance policy.

He said, “I was shocked but also relieved.” “I felt like the system was broken. I felt like I won.”David knew that the methods he used for changing his gender were only available to Albertans who needed to correct their gender in legal documents. His intention was to defeat the complicated insurance system and not attack gender diversity.

He said, “I did it not to show how easy it was to change genders.” “I did it not to ridicule or criticize transgender rights or LGBT rights. David ended up getting the Chevrolet Cruze he wanted with a lower insurance policy. However, he might be hesitant to reveal his identity as the Insurance Bureau of Canada could file a fraudulent claim against David.
