Ford Bronco Design Sketches Reveal Potential Pickup Version

Based on these sketches, the Bronco could look a lot like a pickup truck.

The 2021 Ford Bronco has been completed and is awaiting its delayed production. Now, the engineering and design teams are celebrating by releasing a series videos that chronicle the development process. This latest video shows early sketches of the new SUV as an automobile pickup.

These drawings (gallery) are displayed on a whiteboard that contains drawings of various uses for the new Bronco. The pictures in the left column show the SUV with its fold-down tailgate, pickup truck bed and separate cab.

The lower-middle image has a pickup look, but with bars running from the bed to the cab. The general proportions of the vehicle make it look more like an SUV than a truck

These images show that the Bronco’s designers considered giving the SUV a more pickup-like design. This would have made it a direct competitor to the Jeep Gladiator and not the Wrangler.

Ford could build a Bronco that is more like the Bronco in the future. However, it seems unlikely. The Blue Oval already offers a range of products that will appeal to all truck customers, including Maverick and Ranger. The addition of a Bronco model to the lineup could potentially take sales away from the other.

This video shows the Bronco design in rapid prototyping. The team used foam core to make fully-scaled models that could be modified. This modular design allowed the team to remove a section (e.g. the grille) and see how it looked in real life.
