It was let down by the headlights, and headrests.
After being tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the 2021 Ford Bronco four door did not earn a Top Safety Pick award. After a crash test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the agency found that the headrests did not provide enough whiplash protection and that the headlights were not bright enough to illuminate curves.
Five of six IIHS crash tests were passed with good results by the Bronco. It was not Acceptable for the headrests, however, because the neck of the test dummy sustained moderate force in the rear-end collision.
The SUV’s standard and optional safety equipment received a Superior score for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. Both systems were Advanced in avoiding vehicle-to–vehicle collisions.
Two headlight options are available for the Bronco. Both receive a Marginal score as the low beams aren’t bright enough to illuminate the road well when driving through curves.
To be awarded the Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must have a Good rating in all six crashworthiness assessments. In addition, a vehicle must be available with a front crash prevention system that earns Advanced or Superior scores in the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian checks. You must have headlights that are either Good or Acceptable. Standard headlights must be rated Good or Acceptable to earn the Top Safety Pick+ award.
Ford already offers a wide range of options for the Bronco and will add more next year. The Everglades package will be joining the lineup in summer. Next year, the Bronco Raptor will be joining the range. The Bronco Raptor will be a more powerful model than the standard one and it will sport massive fender flares. According to spy shots, Ford will sell the hotter model only as a 4-door.
