This is the best glimpse yet of the design of the production model.
To celebrate Rod Hall’s Baja 1000 win in the original generation of this tough SUV, the Ford Bronco R racing car has been unveiled. Rod’s granddaughter Shelby Hall will drive the new vehicle in parts of this year’s Baja 1000. Ford will drive the Bronco R nearly 1,000 miles (1,609 km) to the Baja Peninsula before the Baja 1000 race.
Bronco R uses a modified version the chassis of the production vehicle. A modified suspension made with Fox components gives the vehicle 14 inches of travel at the front and 18 at the back. The tires are 37 inches wide and fit around 17-inch aluminum beadlock-capable wheels.
Ford only announced that the engine was a twin-turbo unit. Motor1.com‘s Gabriel Vega saw the engine at the launch and took a closer look. It appeared to be Ford’s EcoBoost V6 2.7-liter.
Bronco R gives us a glimpse of what the final product might look like. The version sold in dealerships likely does not have tires sticking out beyond the fenders. A composite clamshell roof is used on the racer. Access to the single rear seat is possible via a removable panel on the roof. The exterior is adorned with fifteen LED light bars, one of which has subtly “BRONCO” letters.
The interior is sparse and has no windows. Every surface is covered with dirt and sand. The driver holds a thinking steering wheel. The screen that displays the instrument readout is located at the top and a large control panel underneath.
Ford began the Bronco R project back in July. The company kept it a secret and had a small team focused on the task. They worked in a basement area of Ford’s design studio.
