Ford has plenty of reasons to raise the bar with the Mustang’s 760 horsepower and 2020 Corvette.
Spoiler alert: We have a first-drive of the snazzy 2020 Shelby GT500 soon. This is because The Drive was also on the program this week, and they inquired about the Ford GT. Technically, the supercar with aero-infused power is Ford’s halo car with more than 700 horsepower in Mk 2 trim. However, now that Shelby is on the program, the hierarchy isn’t quite as clear.
It was a simple question: What is the Ford GT doing differently? The answer to that question is inconclusive. This is often the case with such things. According to the report, something more is possible for the GT. This is based on an anonymous source who is connected to Ford. It basically states that the company isn’t done with the car. Maybe. When we stated that the outcome was inconclusive, we weren’t lying.
This isn’t just a non-answer. The takeaway isn’t cryptic. However, the real meat comes from the other side. Sometimes, rumors such as these are brought up by automakers and we are told straight-up if it isn’t happening. For example, the recent talk about the Ford Bronco appearing later this November at the Los Angeles Auto Show. We are usually given an even-keeled without comment to maintain a neutral tone.
This means that we have contacted Ford for comment on the Ford GT rumor. We have not yet received a reply to this posting. As soon as we receive it, we will share the information.
Let’s pretend for a second that our dreams come true and Ford creates a new GT variant before 2022. It’s not only to be Ford’s horsepower champion, but because there’s strong motivation. The GT’s 647 horsepower road-legal version still outperforms Shelby in almost every way despite the power difference. So, simply trying to grab the most powerful Blue Oval badge would be quite naive.
Alas, a long-time rival is launching a new mid-engine competitor. Most enthusiasts won’t remember Ford’s track-only GT Mk II announcement back in July. The 2020 Corvette was the most popular motoring news feed worldwide, and still is. Although the base Stingray model may not be as fast as the Ford on a track, Chevrolet is expected to target the GT’s heart with its next Z06. GM has rumors of a 1,000-hp Vette coming soon, so it is well placed to dominate the American supercar scene.
This is assuming the GT doesn’t disappear. This, my friends, could be why this Ford source referred to something else in the future. Maybe.
