What’s in the name?
Ford has extended the Mustang’s legendary nameplate to a completely new vehicle 55 years ago. The Mach-E is an all-electric SUV. While it takes some styling cues form the pony car, they are completely different regardless of what Dearborn may have to say. According to a report by Autocar, it seems that more Mustang-badged models might follow.
At the time of writing, little else is known. However, the British magazine claims that the Blue Oval may be interested in turning “Mustang” into an exclusive performance sub-brand. Other vehicles with this moniker are being looked at, though it is not clear what models they might be or if they would have an electric motor like the mach-E.
There was a wild rumor that Ford would show a four door Mustang to dealers about a year ago. According to the report, it was a sedan with an elegant roofline similar to a coupe. According to the report, the car would have a turbocharged V8 engine and a pair turbos to make it powerful enough to compete with the Porsche Panamera or Audi A7 Sportback. These are the models dealers told that the Mustang four-door would be competing with.
Since then, we have not heard any news about the yet-to be confirmed report. It remains to be seen if Ford will expand its Mustang lineup to include a sedan. It wasn’t a Mustang that the 2021 MachE started as, so it will be fascinating to see where the pony takes the Mustang over the next ten years.
