Ford has created a Sound Symposer device that amplifies the engine’s sound and can channel it through a pipe to a dashboard panel on the Focus ST, so the driver can hear it clearly.
It triggers an electronically-controlled valve to open while under heavy acceleration and can almost double the volume level of the engine inside the cabin. It can be kept closed even when the car is being driven under normal conditions with a moderate acceleration. This allows the engine to rev up and the cabin to remain quiet due to soundproofing and engine refinement.
This system was specifically designed for the EcoBoost Focus ST 250 PS 2.0-liter EcoBoost. According to Bjoern Boettcher, Ford of Europe’s vehicle quality expert, “If you remove the symposer, you get almost zero engine noise under acceleration – that’s it!
