Ford is working on a model based on the VW MEB platform for electric vehicles, but don’t think it will be the Mustang.
Recently, rumors suggested that Ford and Volkswagen could partner to create a Mustang Mach-E version that is smaller This would be possible on the German brand’s MEB platform. Ford claims that this is not the case.
“We do not plan to make an all-electric Mustang that is based on VW’s MEB architecture. We are still on track to offer one fully electric MEB-based car for our European customers, and we are looking at a second. A spokesperson for the company told Ford Authority that they don’t comment on speculation regarding future products.
According to the original rumor, Ford and VW representatives met in November for discussions about electric vehicles. The possibility of smaller Mach-E was discussed. It was suggested that the new model would be a crossover, but with a slightly different design than its bigger sibling.
In July 2019, Ford announced that VW and the Blue Oval had purchased enough MEB platform components and parts to make 600,000 electric cars over six years exclusively for the European market. They were also discussing the possibility of developing an EV jointly that could be used for Europe. They have already agreed to collaborate on the creation future pickups/vans, which includes the next-gen Volkswagen Amarok as well as the Ford Ranger.
Ford has already begun taking deposits for the Mach-E, which will arrive in late 2020. 80 per cent of customers have requested the extended-range, 98.8 kilowatt-hour battery and 55 percent want all-wheel drive. It can be purchased with up to 459 horsepower (342 Kilowatts) or 612 pound-feet (830 Newton meters).
