It is unlikely to be seen on the Nurburgring any time soon.
Ford doesn’t care about lap records. Even though the GT supercar broke the record for fastest lap time at Virginia International Raceway, with “a small support team” and “less than ideal circuit conditions,” the company said it doesn’t plan to replicate that success.
According to The Drive Ford will not be competing against cars like the Viper or Corvette Z06 at the Nurburgring. Ford does not believe that trying to break lap records at VIR is worthwhile. The company will instead continue to build new vehicles.
A Ford representative sent an email to the publication saying that they don’t plan to attempt any lap records at VIR and other circuits in the future. Jamal Hameedi (chief engineer at Ford Performance) stated that “We have new cars to build.”
Other manufacturers are increasing their efforts to offer fast lap times. While Ford and Hyundai seem to be ignoring the possibility, Chevrolet, for instance, stated that it would love to see a Camaro with a sub-7 minute Nurburgring lap speed. Al Oppenheiser is the chief engineer and believes that the ZL1 can be faster around the track with more horsepower and aerowork.
Oppenheiser said in another interview that “as always, any driver will get off the car and say there is more in it.” We believe there is more to it. It’s something we will continue to play with. It would be great to see a Camaro with a speed of less than 7:00 at Nurburgring. It would be a great sight to see.
The Ford GT is still one of the most powerful supercars available today, regardless of what the circumstances. The GT comes standard with a 3.5-liter biturbo EcoBoost engine V6. It produces 647 horsepower (782 kilowatts) as well as 550 pound-feet (745 Newton meters) of torque.
