Ford Ecoboost engine 1.0-liter to produce 180 HP

Autocar reports that Ford is considering a high-performance version of its turbo EcoBoost petrol engine, which will be available in the Ford Focus range from next month in the UK. It produces 177bhp (132kW/180 PS), as it prepares for launch.

As Ford prepares for launch of its turbo EcoBoost petrol engine in the Ford Focus range next month, Autocar reports that a high-performance version with 177bhp (132kW/180 PS) is being considered.

According to Autocar, Gunnar Herrmann (Director Focus) reported that the small displacement three-cylinder engine would be equipped with twin sequential turbocharging. This will increase power output by 54 bhp (40kW/55PS) from the current 123 bhp (92/125PS), which is impressive enough.

This power/displacement ratio for a forced-induction engine is unprecedented in a mainstream vehicle with high volumes. It would also place it at the top of all the records. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution FQ-400, which has a power/displacement of 203bhp (151.3 kW/206 PS) per Liter, is currently the most highly rated forced-induction engine.

Ford is said to have built a prototype that has an electric supercharger, which plays the role of the smaller turbo and then sequentially pumps boost over to the larger turbo from the 1.6-liter Ecoboost.

High-potency, 1.0-liter units could be first used in Focus as a precussor variant of the Focus ST.

Herrmann also confirmed that all 1.6-liter four cylinder engines, which are normally aspirated, will be replaced globally by the 1.0-liter Ecoboost in 2015.

Herrmann stated, “We understand there might be some resistance among customers asked to change from a 1.5 to a 2.0, but we only allow them to drive it.”
