Ford Expedition Timberline Offgrid Concept is All About Overlanding

The Expedition can be transformed into a weekend adventure vehicle with dealer add-ons

The Ford Expedition has been a large SUV that is often associated with kids going to practice or looking for parking spots at the mall. Ford wants to improve the Expedition’s image. This is why the Expedition Timberline was recently introduced. The Timberline Off-Grid Concept by The Blue Oval is a bold new approach to outdoor-adventure.

Although the Expedition is a concept vehicle, it’s possible to build your own Expedition. Ford didn’t specifically state this in its press release, but it is implied by the extensive list of add-ons available at Ford dealerships. The Expedition comes with a Thule roof tent that attaches directly to the Expedition’s roof rails. The package also includes a 180-degree awning and an external portable shower. Ford has installed a variety of off-road lighting fixtures in the front, as well as lights in the liftgate and wheel wells.

Ford made some modifications to the Expedition’s underside to ensure it lives up its off-grid reputation. A set of 2.5-inch FOX Performance Elite Series 2.5 inch shocks is included, as well as 17-inch upgraded wheels with 35-inch all terrain tires. The concept has 12.6 inches of ground clearance thanks to the addition of a factory-available transmission shield.

The Expedition doesn’t have the other add-on. The Turtleback Expedition Series trailer has more storage and hot/cold water provisions. The trailer also includes a kitchenette with a sink and two-burner stove. This particular concept has been given a matching makeover, with identical wheels and a black/orange wrap.

We don’t know how many people would be willing to outfit their Expedition for such duties, but Ford will exhibit the Timberline Off-Grid Concept at Overland Expo East this weekend in Virginia. It will then travel to Las Vegas for the SEMA Show, which runs Nov. 2-5.
