Ford F-150 Raptor Video Spied, Could have 7-Speed DCT Starting at GT500

Ford F-150 Raptor Video Spied, Could have 7-Speed DCT Starting at GT500This prototype is extremely fast for spy photographers.

We are likely very close to unveiling the Ford F-150 Raptor R. It is the second time we have seen a prototype without camo in just one week. The grille only has the R badge. We have some interesting audio tidbits thanks to the above deliciously burbly spy clip.

The Raptor R will be powered by a V8 engine. This was confirmed long ago by Ford officials, although a specific engine type was not mentioned. The Mustang Shelby GT500 has a version of the supercharged V8 that produced 725 to 750 horsepower. It would be enough to dethrone Ram TX. But what about the transmission?

Although a 10-speed automatic transmission is expected, the video shows that some very rapid gear changes are occurring. Although the V8 engine sounds amazing, pay attention to the gear changes at the beginning of the clip (around the 7-second mark). Could this be Shelby’s dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox that swaps cogs?

The R model will pack significantly more power than the F150 Raptor and use upgraded suspension components. The rear suspension has been shown in spy photos with different trailing arms. Also, the exhaust pipes for the larger engine are bigger. Although other suspension modifications are not known, the Raptor standard is capable of handling off-road trails with ease. The R will likely be updated to include beefier components that can handle increased power.

The Raptor R is visually a little sleeper, unless you listen to the loud exhaust note. The bottom of the front bumper has a little more black where the skid plate bolts to up. There is also the R badge in grille. Graphics packages advertising Raptor R are almost certain, but as with the current model it’s possible to leave them off for a stealthy truck. Until you press the accelerator.

The F-150 Raptor R should be available for purchase later in the year. This, along with recent sightings indicating that camo-free trucks are being seen, suggests that a debut could take place in the coming weeks or days.
