Ford’s Q1 truck sales fell more than 30%
In America’s top-selling cars, Chevy, Ram and Ford topped the list last year. For years, trucks have dominated the sales charts and it looks like this year will be no different. Global vehicle production is being hampered by ongoing complications like the coronavirus pandemic and rising gas prices. The semiconductor shortage and war in Ukraine are also hindering global growth. Despite this, trucks sold well in the first quarter 2022.
Ford’s F-Series (which includes the F-150 as well as the Super Duty) remains the king of sales, with 140,701 pickups sold through March. Although this is more than any other competitor, its sales have plummeted compared to last year’s 204,797 trucks. This is a decrease of 31 percent.
Ram maintains its second-place position after taking it from the Chevy silverado at 2021. However, it is barely ahead. Ram has sold 127,116 pickups so far in the first three months 2022. This is more than Chevy’s 121107 pickups. However, Ram sales are down 15% compared to 2021 when it sold 148 836 pickups. Although Chevy sales are down, they are not as low as those of its competitors. Chevy sold 126,591 trucks in 2021, a drop of 4.3 percent.
Although Toyota and Nissan offer pickups, they are not as popular as Ram, Chevy, and Ford. Tundra sold 22,643 trucks by 2022, an increase of 16.8 percent over the 19,134 trucks sold in Q1 2021. With sales dropping 14 percent from 2021, the Titan is trailing all others with 6,415 to 7,463.
Although it’s not clear how 2022 will unfold, automakers face a difficult task, even with the popularity of pickups. Automakers are forced to stop production, stop selling cars that lack certain features or store unfinished models until they arrive. It doesn’t look like issues such as the automakers precarious supply chain will make things easier.
