The future is now.
Ford’s official website features a section for investors. Each month, documents about sales and production numbers are uploaded. The latest files reveal that the Blue Oval has already produced more Mustang Mach-E SUVs as than its sports car.
Ford Mexico has produced 27,816 electric ‘Stangs since May. Flat Rock, Michigan’s plant that produces convertibles and coupes produced 26,089 units in the first five months. This milestone is a significant step in the company’s gradual transition to an all-EV lineup. The Mustang Mach-E sold 10,510 more buyers, while 29,264 Mustangs were sold, which is 1.5 percent more than last year.
The regular Mustang continues to be a popular vehicle despite its age. The sixth-generation S550 model has been in production since 2014. It is obvious that a new model would greatly increase demand, at least for the first few years. It currently outsells the electric SUV by almost three-to-one. However, the gap could shrink following the global rollout of Mach-E.
Ford’s decision to make more Mustang SUVs than sports vehicles is due to a chip shortage. The company is prioritizing newer models in its lineup. Flat Rock’s Flat Rock factory produced no conventionally-powered Mustangs last month. The new products include the Bronco, Bronco Sports, as well as the F-150.
Ford currently has enough Mustang stock to last 24 days. This is far less than the 60-70 days analysts consider a healthy inventory. The Mach-E is hardly ever seen at a dealer, as it takes on average 10 days to sell the electric SUV. California is the largest market for the Mach-E, accounting for 25% of all sales.
