It is the European counterpart to Fusion Sport.
Blue Oval also has a STLine version of the Mondeo for sale in Europe. However, that’s just a show and no additional go. This package is a visual package that brings a sportier exterior design, a more aggressive body and different wheels to the cabin. The ride height is also reduced by 10mm with a stiffer suspension. But that’s it.
The biturbo V6 engine of the U.S.-spec Fusion Sport is required for a complete ST derivative. The EcoBoost unit produces 325 horsepower (242 Kilowatts) as well as 380 pound-feet (515 Newton meters) of torque to an all-wheel drive system via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Although Ford has yet to release the performance numbers, Car & Driver managed to reach 60 mph (96 kph), in a respectable 5.1 seconds. It’s electronically limited to 131 mph (211 km/h).
The Fusion got its beefy Sport version, along with the mild facelift that was introduced just over a year ago. Perhaps the Mondeo will get the same treatment during its mid-cycle refresh? We don’t think so, considering that Ford stated last year at the ST-Line’s unveiling that there isn’t enough market to warrant a Mondeo ST.
Let’s hope Opel does not feel the same. It will soon launch the Insignia Grand Sport OPC to meet the little demand for a high-performance sedan from a premium marque.
Ford is yet to announce when the refreshed Mondeo will be launched in Europe. Auto Bild however, claims it will be presented at the Geneva Motor Show next month. We’ll see.
