Ford recalls 271,000 2013-2014 F-150 trucks for braking defect

Front brake performance could be affected by fluid leakage

Ford will recall over a quarter-million F-150 pickup trucks due to a possible brake problem. A defect in the brake master-cylinder of the Ford F-150 could cause brake fluid to leak into the brake booster.

Only 2013-2014 Ford F-150 trucks with the EcoBoost V6 engine are affected by the problem. The problem only affects the front brake circuit. Rear brakes will remain in effect. Ford claims it has been notified of nine accidents resulting from the problem. However, none of these involved injuries.

In February 2016, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reported that 33 master-cylinder problems had been reported in F-150s 2013 and 2014. Four of these were accidents. NHTSA received reports from owners that their brake pedal was suddenly pushed to the ground because of fluid leakage.

Ford states that it will replace all affected cars’ brake master cylinders and replace any brake booster if brake fluid was found in the booster. There are 270,873 F-150s affected by the recall worldwide. Approximately 225,012 F-150s are in the United States, 43,682 in Canada and 402 in Mexico.
