Ford recalls almost 3 million vehicles to reduce rollaway risk

This recall applies to the Escape, C-Max Fusion, Fusion, Transit Connect and Edge.

Ford is recalling 2,925 968 vehicles in the United States due to a bushing that connects the shift cable and transmission. This bushing can fail and prevent the shifter moving into the desired gear position. Six incidents involving property damage and four cases involving injuries are reported by Ford. There are also 1,630 warranty reports on this issue.

These models are affected by the campaign:

2013-2019 Ford Escape equipped with either the 1.5-liter or 1.6-liter engines, or 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter motors and a 6F35 transmission. Production dates: October 5, 2011 to August 2, 2019, 1,726,763 vehicles

2013-2018 Ford C-Max equipped with the 2.0-liter engine & ECVT transmission. Production dates: January 19, 2012 to April 26, 2018, 143,220 vehicles

2013-2016 Ford Fusion, with the 1.5-liter or 1.6-liter engines, and the 6F35/ECVT transmissions. Production dates: February 3, 2012 to April 4, 2016, 439,483 vehicles

2013-2021 Ford TransitConnect powered by the 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter engines, 6F35 or 7F35 transmissions. Production dates: June 13, 2013 to July 30, 2021. 107,102 vehicles

2015-2018 Ford Edge powered by the 2.0-liter or 2.7-liter engines or 3.5-liter motors and 6F35/6F55 transmissions. Production was from June 25, 2014 to September 4, 2018, with 509,400 vehicles.

This could lead to a situation in which the driver believes the transmission is in Park, but it is not. This could lead to the vehicle rolling away.

Ford is still not certain about the cause of the bushing damage. The material may have been damaged by heat or humidity, according to Ford’s investigation.

Ford dealers will fix the problem by replacing the bushing with a new part made from a different material and a heat stabilizer. A protective cap will be placed over the bushing of the shift cable. Automaker will start contacting affected vehicle owners by mail from June 27.
