Two separate recalls affect several models.
Ford issued a massive recall involving over 700,000. This includes a large portion of its entire lineup. Two separate voluntary recalls are being issued to address fire hazards and issues with trailer brake modules. Numerous incidents have been reported to the Blue Oval in the last months without causing injuries or crashes.
NHTSA Recall Number. 22V-191 refers to 345,451 Ford Escape units and Bronco Sport units, although the exact number for each vehicle was not disclosed.
Notable: 2020-2022 Ford Escapes manufactured between November 19, 2018, and March 1, 2022 will be affected. 2021-2022 Ford Bronco Sport manufactured between February 5, 2020 and March 4, 2022 is also affected.
All Bronco Sport and Ford Escape units are equipped with a 1.5 liter engine. According to NHTSA documents the problem is at the engine oil separator housing. This could crack and cause an oil leak. Engine oil leaks can build up and migrate to ignition sources, increasing the fire danger.
NHTSA Recall No. NHTSA Recall No. 22V-193 concerns 391,836 units Ford F-150 Maverick Expedition, Super Duty and Lincoln Navigator due to a defective trailer brake controller program. The defect description states “trailer brake controller may not properly apply the trailer brakes when towing a trailer equipped with an electric or electric-over-hydraulic brake system.”
This defect could then lead to extended stopping distances, which could cause a crash . Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the oil separators, and replace if necessary, if needed. During this time, the integrated trailer brake controller module software will also be updated. Both services will be provided at no cost.
