The Fusion will be around for a while.
Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last few days, you probably know that Ford is going to end production of most of its American cars and concentrate on trucks and SUVs. The Mustang will be kept by the Blue Oval, while a Focus Active crossover-inspired version will be imported. It is based on the hatchback’s fourth generation.
Ford did not provide any details about the end date for its drastic plans to reduce its car line-up when it announced the plan. Automotive News’ Michael Martinez has now obtained the crucial dates. A spokesperson from Ford confirmed these dates.
The production of the Focus for U.S. markets will end next month. Meanwhile, the final Taurus will be assembled sometime in March 2019. The Fiesta will also be canceled in May. The Fusion, which raised concerns about the fate the Euro-spec Mondeo has been left behind, will be kept for a while. Michael Martinez replied to a comment on Tweet. He stated that the next-generation model was supposed to be in production by 2020 as a 2021MY. However, plans to create a new one were abandoned in December 2017.
Concerning the Focus Active, as shown above, we now know it will be imported into China from mid-2019. It will therefore likely be available in the United States starting in 2020MY.
Although the decision to eliminate all cars and reduce the Focus model family is controversial, The New York Times learned from Ford that Ford is losing money on Fusion, Focus and Fiesta. It’s not news that more people buy SUVs at the expense of cars. We won’t be surprised if other automakers follow suit in the coming years.
