Four Slicks Face Ram TRX Classic Chevy Nova in Close Drag Race

This door-to-door pass does not include any vehicles that are in stock.

You wouldn’t be the fastest vehicle if you drove a new Ram TRX straight to the drag strip for a tune-up night. Ram’s Hellcat-powered offroader can run the quarter-mile in just 12.9 seconds and reach 108 mph. It’s nearly as fast as the Dodge Challenger SRT 392 but what about old-fashioned muscle cars that can live for a quarter mile at a time?

This is what you see in this short drag racing video from Drag Racing. Although we have seen many TRX drag racing, very few of them have been on an actual strip. The driver of this TRX switches from off-road tires to four slicks in order to maximize the grip. We don’t know what modifications the truck has, but we do know that this RAM is not stock. We’ll be explaining in a moment.

Its competition isn’t stock either. It is simply listed as a Chevrolet Nova in the video. To our eyes, it appears to be an example from the early 1970s or possibly a 1972 model. The grille has an SS badge, and we don’t know what modifications were made to this muscle car. We believe it is a healthy car, with a hood and meaty slicks at the back. It was built to race down the track straight.

Here is where we verify that neither vehicle has been modified. Both vehicles leap off the line when the green light turns green. The TRX driver gets the slightest jump. The V8 symphony is heard, but the Ram’s exhaust note sounds the most loud. As the Ram roars down the track we hear five different gear changes. But in the other lane, we can see the old Nova . The Ram crossed the line in 10.92 seconds and reached 124 mph. These numbers are far higher than those of a stock TRX and actually exceed the manufacturer-restricted speed of 118 MPH.

These numbers are far beyond what a stock Nova could do back then, but the Nova crosses the finish line almost at the same speed. It reached 123.9 mph and covered the distance in just 11.1 seconds. The TRX wins the race. But it’s not enough.

That’s still a great deal for a pickup truck that weighs 6,000 pounds, has four doors, five seats, and can fly over sand dunes.
